The JMK Trust was founded in memory of James Menzies-Kitchin, a theatre director of thrilling promise who died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 28. The JMK Trust commemorates James through its James Menzies-Kitchin Young Director Award (The JMK Award) and National Programme, encouraging other emerging directors across the UK in James’ spirit of enterprise, vision and inspiration.
The JMK Young Director Award is an annual opportunity, in which one outstanding director aged 35 or under is awarded funding and support to stage their production of a classic play for a 3-week run at a leading London venue. Formerly at the Young Vic, we have entered a new partnership with the Orange Tree Theatre in 2019. Previous JMK Award winners include Roy Alexander Weise, Polly Findlay, Natalie Abrahami and Bijan Sheibani.
Through our National Programme, we run free directors’ groups at partner venues across the UK. These groups are open to directors of all experience levels and ages. We provide free skills workshops and intensive weekends, as well as the chance to meet regularly with a group of peers to form new collaborations and share ideas.
